Who are the Celts?
The Celtic people in pre-historic times were a collection of tribes of fierce nomadic warrior-horsemen, endowed with artistic talent and technological skills. Women fought alongside men and were, in many ways, endowed with more civil rights than they are in certain parts of the world today.
As the Celts began to settle into agricultural groups, there evolved a structure of social hierarchy based along family lines, inter-tribal agreements, adoptions, and friendships forged.
What we know of the Celts comes to us from early Roman texts, surviving copies of early Irish texts, from literature and folklore, and from the weapons, artifacts, and ornaments they buried with their dead throughout the areas where they settled in Europe and the Isles.
The history of the Celts is older than the history of the British Isles, older even than that of the Roman world. The Celts may be taken as a starting point for a study of the long series of peoples whose arrival and settlement throughout Europe and the Isles have contributed to its history. - 1. One who speaks a Celtic language or who derives ancestry from an area where a Celtic language was spoken; i.e., one from Ireland, the Scottish Hebrides and Highlands, the Isle of Man, Wales, Cornwall, or Brittany.
- 2. The Celts were a group of tribes speaking Indo-European dialects. The proto-Celtic tribes were a nomadic people similar to the Scythians (in fact, there is some speculation that the two groups may actually have been related), and both were skilled horsemen of the grasslands of eastern Europe.
At various times throughout pre-history, the vast Celtic empire stretched from the west of Ireland and the British Isles and Spain, to northern Italy in the south, to Scandinavia in the north, and to the Russian steppes in the east. As their civilization moved from a hunter-gatherer culture to an agri-culture, the Celts lived in semi-fortified villages, with a tribal organization that became increasingly hierarchical as wealth was acquired.
Tribal chiefs, educated counselors, artisans, warriors, and peasants became clearly distinguished, and the powers of the chief became king-like; the Celts, however, never actually had any kings or queens. The concept of royalty was foreign to them; their leaders were elected from the skillful elite of the tribes.
The Celts believed in a polytheistic universe which seems to have centered on the worship of a pantheon of deities and nature spirits, and they relied on the wisdom of their educated class of counselors that today we call the druids. Chief among these deities were the Tuatha dé Danaan [Children of the Goddess Danu], and the spirits of place. Danu’s name is to be found in many river names not only within Britain and Ireland but through those parts of Europe where the Celts once dwelt.
Druids were also responsible for the education of the young and generally for the intellectual life of the tribe; although literate, they taught by oral transmission in poetic verse, and their courses of study are said to have lasted as long as 20 years. The druids believed in the immortality of the soul in a nonjudgmental world of the dead. Their religious ceremonies seem to have been performed chiefly in tree groves and at rivers and lakes. The druids performed animal and human sacrifices, as well as offering libations and votive gifts to their deities, and they practiced divination and other forms of magic.
Tacitus mentions a Celtic tribe, the Bructeri, that was led by a prophetess, and many Irish legends confirm that there were women druids, many of whom were seers, sorceresses, and teachers of military and other skills. Druids were also called upon to arbitrate private and inter-tribal disputes. They thus wielded great political power and were an important cohesive force among the Celtic tribes. The druids in Gaul were the core of the rebellions against Rome. Their power, although broken by the Romans, finally yielded only to Christianity, and even then, it is believed that many of the druids became priests in the new religion, yet continued their old pagan religious ways in secret.
By the 4th century B.C. they could no longer withstand the encroaching Germanic tribes, and they lost most of their holdings in the north and in the west of Germany. From that time on, Celtic history becomes confused with that of the many unsettled tribes in Europe. Celtic language and culture were variously dispersed among peoples of little historical identity, and until the 20th century, historians obscured the very important differences among these groups by naming them all Celts. Further confusion has resulted from the designation of the Celts as a racial group, when in fact, they are not a homogeneous group of people, but a collective of many tribes. The term ‘Celtic’ is actually a cultural one, unrelated to physical heredity. It implies a cultural tradition maintained through many centuries of common history in the same general geographic area.
The earliest definitive archaeological evidence distinguishing the Celts as a distinct culture in central Europe, dates from c.800BC to c.500BC, and is known as the Hallstatt period, named after a village in Salzkammergut, Austria, where prehistoric salt and iron mines were discovered. The use of iron is believed to have originated with the Scythians, who are considered by some historians as the progenitors of the Celtic people. The Celts, armed with iron weapons and mounted on horses, spread rapidly over Europe, crossing into the British Isles, moving south over France, Italy, and Spain, fighting the Macedonians, and penetrating into Asia Minor, where they raided Hellenistic centers. Celtic warfare and migrations, beginning in the 5th century B.C., spread the use of iron into western Europe and to the British Isles.

Their wealth from trade and from raiding helped them to maintain their dominance over Central Europe during the Iron Age. The Late Iron Age in Europe, which is dated from this period, is called La Téne. The La Téne culture developed around 500BC among the Celts. Art flourished in richly ornamented styles; the Gundestrop Cauldron, which was found in Denmark, is just one example of La Téne artistry. The La Téne period is characterized by an art style that incorporated Greek, Etruscan, and Scythian motifs and translated them into highly abstract designs in metal, pottery, and wood. The earliest phase of La Téne culture, from the 6th to the late 5th century B.C., spread from the middle Rhine region east into the Danube valley, south into Switzerland, and west and north into France, the Low Countries, Denmark, and the British Isles. La Téne culture flourished until subjected to the advances of the Roman Empire.
The Romans called them Galli and regarded them as barbarians who could neither speak a civilized language, nor write any language at all. To the Greeks, they were the Keltoi or Galatai. Their skill in the arts, horsemanship, and in metalworking was equal, and in some cases, superior, to that of their civilized Greek and Roman counterparts. Recent archaeological evidence suggests that during the La Téne era, Celtic civilization evolved and flourished throughout Europe for several hundred years before the rise of the Roman Empire.

The Fir Bolg (where Fir is the Gaelic for “man”) were actually a settlement of Belgic Celts. Other pre-Roman Belgic settlements were in southern Britain.
